Elevation profile
The story
At 154 metres the Kemmelberg is the roof of West Flanders, and you have to earn it. From Kemmel village you start on tarmac until the road dives into the trees and the cobbles begin. There it kicks up to around sixteen percent, on stones that turn treacherous in the rain. At the top, by the Belvédère tower, stands the French First World War memorial known locally as 'Den Engel', unveiled in 1932. The other flank, past the French ossuary, is even steeper and serves as the final test of a West Flemish spring classic. For anyone with a soft spot for the Westhoek.
