The story
Some roads follow a valley; this one follows the edge. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the D23 runs a loop along the north rim of the Gorges du Verdon, and fourteen belvédères invite you to pull over and stare hundreds of metres down to the green river between the limestone walls. Part of the loop is one-way and driven clockwise, threading through short tunnels cut in the rock. The road tops out above 1,300 metres, and its middle section closes in winter. Taking it slowly is not a penalty here; it is the whole point. For the study of anyone who sees a canyon and thinks of the view first.
