The story
The Angliru starts like a trap. From La Vega in Riosa the first five kilometres to Viapará are almost reasonable – then the mountain shows its teeth. The last six or seven kilometres are brutal, with ramps famous enough to have names: Les Cabanes at 22 percent, Les Picones, El Aviru and, about three kilometres from the top, the Cueña les Cabres at 23.5 percent, where you crawl rather than ride. At 1573 metres the green mountains of Asturias spread out below you. Since 1999 a grand-tour stage has finished here ten times. For the wall of anyone who has ever wondered how steep steep can get.
