The story

Lay of the Land: the whole of Furkapass in one drawing, streets, water, woods and hills included, with the route drawn into the map. Atlas prints the whole map tone on tone in mustard, with the streets and the route in paper white. On the Furka Pass, a lot comes down to one corner. On the Valais side the road swings past the Rhône Glacier, where the river is born, and many drivers come just for the hairpin high above Gletsch. Between Realp in Uri and Gletsch lie 23 kilometres of road, topping out at 2,429 metres and never steeper than 11 percent. On the western ramp the Grimsel hairpins face you across the valley, and together with the Susten the Furka forms a classic three-pass loop. Usually open from late June to October. For anyone who has ridden that loop, or is still planning it.
