Lay of the Land: the whole of Gotthardpass in one drawing, streets, water, woods and hills included, with the route drawn into the map. Atlas prints the whole map tone on tone in forest, with the streets and the route in paper white. There is a quick way over the Gotthard, and there is the Tremola. From Airolo you could take the modern road, but the real thing is the old cobbled route through the Val Tremola: 24 hairpins stacked up the slope in just four kilometres, gaining 300 metres as they go. The rumble of stone under your wheels stays with you long after. At 2,106 metres the hospice and museum mark the summit, before the road runs down to Andermatt in Uri, around 26 kilometres in all. Usually open from June to October. For everyone who has driven the Tremola, and everyone who still means to.
