Lay of the Land: the whole of Grossglockner in one drawing, streets, water, woods and hills included, with the route drawn into the map. Atlas prints the whole map tone on tone in deep red, with the streets and the route in paper white. Opened in 1935, the Großglockner High Alpine Road still feels like an occasion. Between Bruck and Heiligenblut you count 36 numbered hairpins, topping out at the Hochtor tunnel at 2,504 metres, in Hohe Tauern National Park. Spur roads tempt you into detours: up to the Edelweißspitze at 2,571 metres for a sweeping panorama, and out to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, face to face with the Großglockner itself. On the far side the road drops down to Heiligenblut in Carinthia. This toll road is open from May into the autumn. A striking piece for the living room of anyone who likes to see Austria from up high.
