Elevation profile
The story
From the desert floor near Al Ain, this road winds up the bare flank of Jebel Hafeet through sixty turns. The tarmac is wide and smooth: three lanes, two up and one down, over 11.7 kilometres. The higher you climb, the further you see across the oasis city and the plain around it, especially in the golden light of late afternoon. The road opened in 1980, and since 2019 a stage of an international cycle race has finished at the top. It ends at a car park just below the summit, near a hotel and a palace. For anyone who knows great hairpins exist in the desert too.
