Lay of the Land: the whole of Positano in one drawing, streets, water, woods and hills included, with the route drawn into the map. Carte Routière '72 draws it as an old touring map: cream paper, green woods, the route in red and white kerb blocks, a scale bar and a north arrow. Rock face on one side, a long drop to the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other. The SS163 Amalfitana winds from Meta across the Sorrento peninsula to Positano, then on past Praiano, Amalfi, Maiori and Cetara to Vietri sul Mare, some 50 kilometres. One narrow lane each way, carved into the cliffs, with bends so tight that oncoming traffic sometimes has to wait. In between, pastel villages cling to the slopes. Work began under the Bourbons in 1832, and the road was dedicated to King Ferdinand II. The coast has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. For anyone already driving it in their head, window down.
