Elevation profile
The story
The Route des Crêtes was not built for the view, but for war. During the First World War the French army built it as a strategic road behind the front line, high along the crest of the Vosges. Today it offers nearly eighty kilometres of ridge driving: from the Col des Bagenelles over the Col du Bonhomme and the Col de la Schlucht to Le Markstein and the Grand Ballon, where it peaks at 1,343 metres. Rolling high pastures, the Alsace plain far below. The Hartmannswillerkopf memorial stands near its southern end. It closes in winter. For anyone who likes their views with a side of history.
