The story
On this road the sea is never out of sight. Between Kårvåg and Vevang, Atlanterhavsveien – the Atlantic Ocean Road – skips from island to skerry over eight bridges in just over eight kilometres, hugging the waterline. Its signature is the Storseisundet bridge, 260 metres long and curved so steeply that from certain angles the road seems to end in thin air. On wild days, spray blows across the tarmac. It opened on 7 July 1989, its tolls were dropped in 1999, a decade ahead of schedule, and in 2005 it was named construction of the century. For the hallway of anyone who plans road trips around a coastline.
