The story
Twenty miles, three roads and one loop across the empty heart of North Wales. From Pentrefoelas the A543 climbs onto the heather moorland of Mynydd Hiraethog, past a lonely inn once called the highest pub in Wales. Then the B4501 takes you south beside Llyn Brenig, a reservoir built in the 1970s and the fourth largest lake in Wales. Through Cerrigydrudion, the A5 brings you back to the start. Rolling straights, quick kinks and views far across the moor. Average-speed cameras have watched the A543 since 2019, so enjoy the scenery. For anyone who thinks the best drive is a loop with no destination.
