The story
Twelve miles between Macclesfield and Buxton, and not a dull yard among them. On the Macclesfield side, the A537 strings together an almost unbroken run of sharp, often blind bends before breaking out onto the open moors of the Peak District. At over 500 metres it passes the old inn that gave the road its name, once Britain's second-highest pub. For years it was ranked the most dangerous road in the country; average-speed cameras have kept things in check since 2010–2011. Take it calmly and its beauty finally shows. For the wall of anyone who knows the Peak District from the saddle or the driver's seat.
