The story
The Umbrail is the quiet back door to the Stelvio. From Santa Maria in Val Müstair the road twists up through forest and alpine pasture, hairpin after hairpin, growing narrower as the landscape turns barer. At 2,501 metres you reach the highest paved road pass in Switzerland, right on the Italian border, and a few hundred metres later you join the Stelvio road just below its summit. Not so long ago part of the climb was still gravel; today it is tarmac all the way, yet it has kept its wild edge. For anyone who knows that the best route up is rarely the obvious one.
