The story
The Gavia starts politely and ends wild. From Bormio the road climbs through Valfurva inside Stelvio National Park, where you can settle into a steady rhythm. Then you crest 2,621 metres and drop towards Ponte di Legno, and everything tightens: the southern ramp is narrow, in places barely wider than a single car, with pitches of up to 16 per cent. It was only fully paved in the late 1990s. The big cycling races have often made this their highest point, and up here you understand why: it is wild, bare and silent. For the wall of anyone who likes their mountain roads raw.
