The story
Since 1965 the Bernina Pass has stayed open all year, making it one of the highest Alpine passes you can cross even in winter. From Pontresina the road climbs a broad, high valley to a summit above 2,300 metres, keeping company with the Bernina railway, which tops out nearby at Ospizio Bernina, 2,253 metres up. On the southern side the road drops at up to 10 percent towards Poschiavo, where the language turns Italian and the air grows softer. It's 32 kilometres in total. For anyone who never quite lets go of the mountains, not even in winter, right above the sofa.
