The story
The Julier Pass is the main road into the Upper Engadine, and it stays open all year round. From Tiefencastel the northern ramp is a long, steady climb up the Surses valley, past the Marmorera dam and its reservoir, until the landscape turns bare and you crest the summit at 2,284 metres. From there it's a short, purposeful drop to Silvaplana, with its lake shining below. Around 43 kilometres in all, and even the steepest pitches stay just under 12 percent. For anyone who treats the Engadine as a second home, hanging on a wall in the first.
