The story
Count the hairpins on the Splügen Pass and you'll pass 70, most of them on the Italian side. From the village of Splügen in Graubünden the road twists its way up to the border at 2,114 metres. Just beyond lies the Montespluga reservoir, and then the real descent begins: bend after bend, at up to 13 percent, down to Chiavenna in Lombardy, with the landscape growing more southern at every turn. It's 39 kilometres in total, and the pass is usually open from June to October. For the hairpin collector who likes the whole collection on display, in the hallway or above the desk.
