The story
The Maloja Pass really only has one side. From Silvaplana you cruise almost level along the Engadine lakes to the summit at 1,815 metres, and then the ground simply falls away. From the top the road loses 1,482 metres over 32 kilometres, first down a stack of thirteen hairpins into the Val Bregaglia, then on to Chiavenna in Italy, the landscape turning softer and more southern with every bend. It's open all year and never steeper than 9 percent. For anyone who dreams of heading south from the Engadine, perfect in the kitchen or dining room.
