The story
At the top of the San Bernardino Pass, Lago Moesola lies right beside the tarmac, a still mountain lake at 2,066 metres. Quiet is the theme up here: since 1967, through traffic has used a 6.6-kilometre tunnel deep below. From Hinterrhein, in the German-speaking Rheinwald, the old road winds upward; on the far side it drops to the village of San Bernardino, already in the Italian-speaking part of Graubünden. It's a short pass of 16.6 kilometres, with gradients of up to 9.7 percent, closed from December to April. For anyone who always takes the turn-off uphill, in a calm corner of the home.
