The story
Bealach na Bà means 'pass of the cattle', and that is exactly what it was: an old drovers' route that became a road in 1822. From Tornapress at the head of Loch Kishorn, a narrow single-track road with passing places climbs from sea level to more than 600 metres, the greatest ascent of any road climb in the United Kingdom. Near the top come proper Alpine-style hairpins and gradients approaching 20 per cent. On a clear day the summit looks out over the sea to the islands. Then you drop down to remote Applecross. For anyone who knows the Highlands, or has dreamed of them for years.
