The story
The Susten Pass is less a fight than one long, fluid swing. When it opened in 1946, its builders chose wide, sweeping curves over tight switchbacks, and you can still feel that rhythm today. Over 46 kilometres, from Innertkirchen up the Gadmertal and down the Meiental to Wassen, the gradient never tops 9 percent. Near the top the road dives into the summit tunnel, and along the way the views reach across to the Stein Glacier and its grey-blue ice. The pass is usually open from June to October. For anyone who drives for flow rather than drama, above the sofa or in the study.
