The story
From Innertkirchen in the Haslital, the Grimsel Pass climbs steadily into ever barer country: forest first, then smooth granite and dark water. The road skirts the Räterichsboden and Grimsel reservoirs before reaching the little Totensee on the summit at 2,164 metres. Then comes the best part: wide hairpins pouring down to Gletsch, with the Furka road staring back from the opposite slope. It's 32 kilometres in all, up to 11 percent on the northern side, and usually open from June to October. For the living room of anyone whose idea of a holiday involves granite, reservoirs and a full tank.
