Elevation profile
The story
Out of Andermatt a tight run of hairpins lifts you onto the Oberalp, and then the pass opens up into wide, bare uplands. The summit at 2,044 metres marks the border between Uri and Graubünden, and even in deep winter a mountain railway still climbs over it. Three kilometres to the south lies Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine, a small tarn whose water will eventually reach the North Sea. To the east the road unwinds gently through the Surselva, all the way down to Disentis. A fine piece for anyone who lives along the Rhine and likes to know where the river begins.
