The story
Between 1922 and 1934, racing drivers and motorcyclists charged up this road against the clock. Today you can take the Klausen Pass at your own pace: from Altdorf up the Schächental to 1,948 metres, then across the Urnerboden, a vast high pasture where the road runs for kilometres between grazing cattle, before dropping down to Linthal in the canton of Glarus. The full crossing is 46.5 kilometres and never steeper than 9 percent. The pass closes in winter, roughly from November to May. For anyone with a soft spot for motor-racing history, in the garage or above the desk.
