The story
No pass road lying entirely inside Switzerland climbs higher than the Nufenen: its summit sits at 2,478 metres. It's also a young road, opened only in 1969. From Ulrichen in the Goms the climb reaches 13 percent as it heads into increasingly raw, barren high country, until little is left but rock, scree and sky. Over the top, the road unwinds down the Val Bedretto to Airolo in Ticino, where the road signs suddenly switch to Italian. It's 37 kilometres in total, and the pass is usually open from June to October. For the wall of anyone who likes to aim high.
