The story
Leave Red Lodge, Montana, and the Beartooth Highway soon starts stacking switchbacks up the mountainside, all the way to Beartooth Pass in Wyoming at 10,947 feet. Up top lies a bare alpine plateau scattered with small lakes and snowfields that linger well into summer. The air is thin, the horizon endless. Beyond the pass the road drops to Cooke City and the Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone, 68 miles from where you started. Opened in 1936, it is only open from late May to mid-October; the rest of the year belongs to the snow. For the den of anyone who counts feet climbed, not miles covered.
