The story
The name tells you where you are: Cherohala blends Cherokee and Nantahala, the two national forests this skyway crosses. From Tellico Plains in Tennessee the road sweeps up into the Unicoi Mountains in long, wide curves, reaching overlooks more than a mile high, with ridge after blue ridge fading towards the horizon. It was completed in 1996 after decades of construction. Then it drops into North Carolina towards Robbinsville, where US 129 is never far away. The tarmac is generous and the traffic often light. For anyone who, after a day of tight corners, craves some open space.
