The story
Eleven miles and, if the legend is to be believed, 318 curves. Whether anyone ever counted them properly hardly matters: on US 129 at Deals Gap the bars or the wheel are almost never straight. From the North Carolina–Tennessee line the road twists through dense forest along the south-western edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, each bend flowing into the next. The speed limit dropped from 55 to 30 mph in 2005, and not without reason. At the Tabcat Creek bridge, Calderwood Lake glints through the trees and it is all over. For anyone who measures a road in corners rather than miles.
