The story
Big name, few guardrails. Between the old mining towns of Ouray and Silverton, US 550 threads through the Uncompahgre Gorge, with sheer drop-offs you would rather not look into for long. Then it climbs to Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet, deep in the San Juan Mountains, where the slopes glow rust red. It began as a toll road in 1883, and the modern highway was completed in 1924. On the Ouray side the grade reaches 8 per cent, and the road stays open all year, even when the snowploughs are working overtime. For anyone who wants to see the Rockies at their most thrilling.
