The story
Nine kilometres, 114 curves and the Atlantic far below. Chapman's Peak Drive is cut into the cliffs of the Cape Peninsula between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, just outside Cape Town. Rock rises sheer on one side; on the other the view sweeps across the bay to the long beach at Noordhoek. Building began in 1915 and the road opened on 6 May 1922. After fatal rockfalls it was rebuilt with catch fences, canopies and a 155-metre half tunnel, reopening as a toll road in December 2003. In strong wind or heavy rain it closes as a precaution. For anyone who would rather see Cape Town from behind the wheel.
