The story
Drive from Bregenz through the Bregenzerwald towards the Lech valley and the highest point of the journey is the Hochtannberg Pass. It's a short one, barely ten kilometres from Schröcken to Warth, but the Schröcken side bites, with stretches of up to 14 percent. When that ramp was rebuilt, it gained a hairpin built on a bridge in 1988. At the top the landscape opens into alpine pastures ringed by peaks, and the road stays open all year apart from brief closures after heavy snow. Ideal for the kitchen wall of anyone who knows the Bregenzerwald, or simply wants to.
