The story
The Silvretta High Alpine Road was built for hydropower, and it shows: at the top, on the Bielerhöhe at 2,032 metres, the Silvretta reservoir lies cradled between the peaks. From Partenen in the Montafon, 32 hairpins stack up the mountainside; from Galtür in the Paznaun there are just two. That contrast is what makes this road so memorable. Note that the Montafon side has been closed for an extended period since the debris flows of 2024, while the Bielerhöhe can still be reached from Galtür in summer. For anyone who has driven those western hairpins, or is waiting to.
