The route

The story

Until 2001, Hockenheim was one of the fastest circuits in the world. From the stadium the cars charged down an endless straight into the forest, almost flat out to the Ostkurve, before a second forest straight brought them back. Only a few chicanes broke up the speed. Deep in the woods there were no grandstands, just the sound of engines rising between the pines. In 2002 the circuit was shortened and the forest section was given back to nature. The faint line shows today's compact layout.
