The story

On the banks of the Santerno river in Emilia-Romagna, Imola winds through green parkland and gentle hills. Opened in 1953, it is an old-school, anticlockwise circuit with narrow tarmac, gravel traps and little room to breathe. After Tamburello and Villeneuve the cars brake hard for the Tosa hairpin, climb to Piratella and plunge down through Acque Minerali. The Variante Alta rattles everyone over its kerbs before the double left of Rivazza leads back to the pits. Made for purists who prefer character over concrete run-off.
