    The story

On the flat west side of Indianapolis, in a town that named itself after the track, lies the oval that has been the heart of open-wheel racing since 1909. Its 2.5 miles form a rounded rectangle: four near-identical turns banked at only about nine degrees, linked by two long straights and two short chutes. Once paved with millions of bricks, it still keeps a yard of them at the start-finish line. Every May the 500-mile race draws a colossal crowd. Few shapes carry more racing history onto a wall.
