The story
La Redoute starts where you least expect it: beside the motorway, just past the Amblève in Sougné-Remouchamps. Then it rears up at once – over a kilometre and a half at nearly ten percent, with ramps of 22. On race day the tarmac is covered in painted names and the verges are packed with fans. The name comes from an Austrian redoubt; the monument at the top marks the French victory at the Battle of Sprimont on 18 September 1794. In the oldest classic it has long been the traditional springboard for attacks in the finale. For everyone who thinks the Ardennes are at their finest in April.
