The story
From 1921 until 1978 these everyday Ardennes roads formed a racing circuit of just over fourteen kilometres, closed to traffic only on race days. You can still drive them: at Burnenville a long, fast right-hander sweeps downhill towards Malmedy, then comes the Masta straight with its notorious kink, a left-right between farmhouses once taken flat out. At Stavelot the old circuit turned back towards Francorchamps. By 1973 the lap record stood at an average of 262 km/h. Today these are quiet country lanes with a speed limit, and rightly so. For anyone who likes to read racing history straight off the map.
