    The story

Motegi lies among the forested hills of Tochigi prefecture, a few hours' drive north of Tokyo, where rice paddies give way to wooded slopes. Opened in 1997, its 4.801-kilometre lap is a classic stop-and-go layout: long straights punctuated by heavy braking into hairpins and slow corners, where traction and late braking decide almost everything. It has long hosted the Japanese round of the motorcycle Grand Prix, usually in crisp autumn weather. In a calm living room, it brings a quiet dose of Japanese precision.
