The story
Forty-eight hairpins, each marked with a numbered stone counting down to 1 at the top: the Stelvio from Prato is the archetypal Alpine pass. First the road follows the valley through Trafoi, climbing steadily through forest. Then the bends stack up beneath the Ortler glaciers, until the final ladder of switchbacks hangs above you like a ribbon. Nearly 25 kilometres and over 1,800 vertical metres later, you top out above 2,750 metres, the highest point the great Italian stage race ever reached. A memorial at the summit honours Fausto Coppi, first over the top in 1953. For riders who count bends rather than fear them.
