The story
If the Stelvio is the showpiece, the Gavia is its wild sibling. From Ponte di Legno you climb more than 1,300 metres to a pass above 2,600 metres, averaging around eight per cent. The higher you go, the narrower and rougher the road becomes, with steep ramps on the upper slopes. At the top Rifugio Bonetta sits in a bare, silent world of rock and lingering snow. In 1988 a stage over the Gavia was raced through a snowstorm and passed into legend, and more than once the pass has been the highest point of the great Italian stage race. For riders who like their mountains raw.
