The route
The story
Until 1978, Spa-Francorchamps was not a circuit but a lap of more than fourteen kilometres on ordinary Ardennes roads. After La Source, Eau Rouge and the Kemmel straight, the track did not turn right at Les Combes but plunged straight on: past Burnenville, through the fast Malmedy bend and then flat out along the Masta straight, between houses and farms. At Stavelot the road turned back towards Blanchimont and the start. It was one of the fastest and most dangerous tracks in the world. The faint line shows how small today's circuit is inside it.
