Elevation profile
The story
The biggest race in cycling has never been higher than this: 2,802 metres on the Cime de la Bonette. From Jausiers in the Ubaye valley it is a long, steady haul of nearly 1,600 metres of climbing, the gradient never frightening but the altitude weighing heavier with every kilometre. You pass the ruined military barracks of Restefond, ride by the Col de la Bonette itself and then tackle the loop around the Cime, the steepest part of the day. A sign calls it the highest road in Europe, a claim that is disputed. For the rider who wants the roof of their season on the wall.
