The story
The south side of the Izoard starts deep in the Queyras, below Château-Queyras, and leads up through Arvieux. In Brunissard the road bites with steep ramps, then hairpins carry you up through the forest. Above the trees the landscape changes completely: the Casse Déserte, a lunar sweep of scree and jagged rock pinnacles, where the road even dips for a moment before the final push. Plaques on the rocks honour Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet. The last two kilometres lead to the col, above 2,300 metres, and the monument to General Berge. A print for lovers of wild, empty mountains.
