The story
From the floor of the Tinée valley to a col at 1,678 metres, this stage climbs well over a thousand metres in barely 22 kilometres. It starts narrow at Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée and winds up past Roubion through hairpins that are often glazed with ice, then switches to a flat-out descent towards Beuil. First used in 1965, the Couillole became one of the classic tests of the winter rally in the Alps, and 2006 brought the last run in this long form. In 2022 and 2023 a shorter version from Roure kept the climb in the rally. For a chalet, a garage or any wall where a little mountain spirit belongs.
