The story
You earn the Galibier in two stages. First the Col du Télégraphe out of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, then a breather in Valloire, and then the real work begins: a bare high valley where the air grows thinner with every bend. Just below the top a narrow 370-metre tunnel offers a shortcut, but purists go over the col itself at 2,642 metres. On the south side, with stretches as steep as 12 per cent, the road drops to the Col du Lautaret, the glaciers of La Meije on the horizon. Cyclists know it from the big cycling races. For anyone who has driven, ridden or dreamed it.
