The story
From Lanslebourg in the Haute-Maurienne you wind up through a string of wide bends, and suddenly a high plateau opens out with a vast reservoir set between green slopes. The Col du Mont-Cenis sits at just over 2,000 metres and has been a gateway to Italy for centuries. Napoleon had a carriage road built here in the early 1800s, and from 1868 to 1871 a railway even ran over the pass. You follow the lake, cross the border and drop in long loops to Susa in Piedmont. For anyone who loves a border crossing with a story.
