The story
This is the gentle giant of the Alpine passes. Travellers have crossed the Little St Bernard since Roman times, and the gradients are still kind: nowhere much steeper than 8 per cent. From Bourg-Saint-Maurice you swing up a long ladder of hairpins to La Rosière, then the landscape opens out and the road rolls on to the summit at 2,188 metres. Up there stand an ancient stone pillar, the Colonne de Joux, and a hospice. On the Italian side you glide down via La Thuile to Pré-Saint-Didier in the Aosta Valley. A map for those who would rather cruise than chase.
