The story
Long before there were cars, travellers were already crossing the Great St Bernard. The hospice at the top was founded in 1049 and is the cradle of the famous St Bernard rescue dogs, and in May 1800 Napoleon's army marched over here. From Martigny the road follows the valley in a long, steady climb. Where most traffic disappears into the tunnel, you carry on upwards, the final kilometres winding to 2,469 metres, the third-highest road pass in Switzerland, beside a still lake among bare rock. On the Italian side you drop down to Aosta. For anyone who likes their roads with centuries of history attached.
