Elevation profile
The story
The Simplon is a pass with history built into its tarmac. Napoleon ordered the road between 1801 and 1805, and you can still feel it: generous curves and nothing steeper than 9 per cent. From Brig you swing up across the slender Ganter bridge and through avalanche galleries that keep the pass open all year round. At 2,005 metres a stone eagle stands guard over the summit. Then the road drops through a narrow gorge into Italy and the Val d'Ossola, all the way to Domodossola. One for the study wall of anyone who loves history as much as a beautifully drawn bend.
