The story
The Kaunertal Glacier Road is not a pass but a dead end, one that leads straight to the ice. From Feichten at 1,287 metres you first run alongside the Gepatsch reservoir, and then the climb begins in earnest: 29 hairpins up through the Ötztal Alps until, at 2,750 metres beside the Weißsee glacier, the road simply stops. Because there is a glacier ski area at the top, this toll road stays open all year. The way back follows the same bends, now with the whole valley spread out below you. A cool piece for anyone drawn to roads that end where the ice begins.
